The Trump movement's most illuminating and distinctive occasions – not its most important, nor most brutal, nor most dangerous, nor stupidest, but perhaps its most illuminating – came earlier this autumn. Over the span of multiple weeks, the American president began displaying everyone his designs for a lavish reception room twice the size of the White House and subsequently started independently demolishing the East Wing portion to construct it.
He has committed acts countless times more severe – the current estimate of fatalities from his cuts to international aid stands at 600,000 and increasing, and recently a study forecast his petroleum strategies would cause deaths an additional 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No previous president would have risked – really, no former commander would have conceived – independently wrecking significant portions of the executive mansion to construct a royal-themed celebration hall, with the direct cooperation of some of the nation's most affluent, almost all of whom maintain dealings with the government.
We transitioned from 'the gentle will obtain the planet' into 'the meek shall die to cholera'
As disorienting as it is to watch the chief executive attempt to overturn the established notion regarding democracy and replace it with its direct contrary, there is one large group within America who might not perceive it completely novel. That is those of us – in older age cohorts almost a majority – who were raised as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have witnessed over the years while conservative evangelical congregations transformed the Christ we learned about into the complete reverse of our understanding of him. Fundamentally, they converted a persona of affection into a figure of hostility who blesses exactly the harshness that he condemned in scripture; this change developed more slowly, over decades as opposed to months, yet it remains disconcerting in the same ways, a bewildering emotional blow for countless people.
A Harmful Christianity Takes Hold
So let me first describe the Jesus from my upbringing, as conceptually Jesus is the center of Christian religion, and because the quickly increasing segment of Americans may possess limited understanding about him as they consider themselves skeptics or uncertain individuals or religiously unaffiliated. I raise no objection with these different approaches, nor with alternative spiritual paths; but I do think that there are pearls of great price within Christian narrative.
It is decidedly absolutely not the account of an authoritative monarch appearing; rather, an infant arrives to parents without shelter in an automotive shelter, who are forced to hastily depart to a foreign land to evade secret police. The child matures in simple surroundings, an employed craftsman; his teaching is about love for fellow humans, especially for the impoverished – and not a sentimental love, but tangible care, expressed by feeding and protecting. Jesus' answer to hostility is to turn the opposite cheek – not as an act of passive acceptance, but as a method to educate the attacker; his method regarding offenses is that if an individual takes your jacket you must offer them your pullover also.
The obvious and clear reality that Christ from scripture requests a type of radical love centered on the needy has consistently rendered Christian religion rather a provocative belief system: attractive to the masses, but because of its intrinsic extremism needing to be contained. In the fifties it was contained by dilution – Protestant Christianity was so prevalent that it essentially sanctified existing conditions.
A Struggle for the Highest Among Us
Therefore I have felt heartened to see the determined opposition against Trump develop over the last twelve months. It has served as great solace to help build the campaign that has demonstrated publicly via continuous gatherings, and seems to have inspired voters to show up in numbers in interim political contests. We will need to continue it, and in the same spirit, featuring US banners during all protests and calls to the best parts within national heritage.
We will be questioned ... how did you receive the stranger? Did you accept these individuals and embrace them or reject?
The nation is most protected, in other words, through connection to the finest within national tradition, exactly as the Christian faith is most protected by reference to what makes it unique and wonderful, which is the example of Jesus.
